Doha Film Institute unveils 44 projects

Doha Film Institute unveils 44 projects for 2024 spring grants at Cannes including Directors’ Fortnight entry ‘To A Land Unknown’

The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has selected 44 projects for its 2024 spring grants cycle, including Mahdi Fleifel’s To A Land Unknown, which has its world premiere in Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes next Wednesday, May 22.

Fleifel’s fiction feature debut is a crime thriller about a Palestinian refugee living on the fringes of Athens society, who seeks revenge on the smuggler who ripped him off.

Palestinian-Danish filmmaker Fleifel studied at the UK’s National Film and Television School, and previously made 2012 feature-length documentary A World Not Ours, which played at the Berlinale and CPH:DOX.

To A Land Unknown received a post-production grant in the DFI’s Middle East-North Africa feature narrative strand.

Zejtune, the second feature from Maltese filmmaker Alex Camilleri, receives a non-MENA feature narrative post-production grant. The story follows a woman determined to claim her family inheritance and leave Malta behind, until she encounters an elderly troubadour.

Camilleri previously directed Luzzu, which debuted at Sundance in 2021, winning the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury award for acting for Jesmark Scicluna.

The 44 projects hail from 17 countries. 25 come from women filmmakers, with 14 from returning DFI grantees.

“The founding objective of our Grants programme is to build a new collective of authentic voices who bring diversity and depth to the medium of cinema and encourage cross-cultural exchange and dialogue,” said Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, DFI CEO.

“We are particularly excited about the notable presence of female talent, who represent the bold new energy of filmmaking in the Arab world.”
