OUR NOTES

A lovely piece of news arrived this week.

Our friend Jeandré Gerding has just been featured in the latest Documentary Filmmakers’ Association newsletter.

I’ve known Jeandré for years. It’s been amazing watching his journey. He’s gone on to become one of Africa’s leading wildlife cinematographers, working with the BBC, National Geographic, Apple, Disney and Discovery. Couldn’t be happier for him.

What really made me smile, though, was his answer to the question about the project he’s most proud of.

Rather than choosing one of the incredible wildlife films he’s made in recent years, he mentioned Tin Town – the documentary we made together around the 2010 World Cup.

Early in my career, I worked on a film called Tin Town with fellow DFA member Geoff Arbourne. The film looked into human rights abuses surrounding the World Cup. It was a powerful experience that I’m still proud of today – we could tangibly see how the film helped shape the lives of future leaders in the sporting world, and even helped rehouse families.
