‘Ordinary People. Extraordinary Courage’
STORY
Between 1969 and 1990, dozens of young British volunteers secretly travelled to apartheid South Africa on behalf of the banned African National Congress. Posing as tourists, they carried hidden suitcases filled with underground propaganda, distributing thousands of leaflets while risking arrest, imprisonment and far worse.
Combining remarkable archive footage with first-hand testimony, LONDON RECRUITS uncovers one of the least-known chapters of the international struggle against apartheid. The film tells the extraordinary true story of ordinary people whose courage helped challenge one of the twentieth century’s most oppressive regimes.
Premiering as the opening film of the 2024 Joburg Film Festival, where it won Best Documentary, LONDON RECRUITS has since been screened internationally at festivals, cinemas, universities and community venues, preserving an inspiring story of solidarity, resistance and hope for new generations.
